Attracting and retaining new talent in the UK mortgage industry is key to the progression of our sector. Today’s young professionals want more than just a job. They are actively seeking careers that are purposeful, impactful and aligned with making a real difference. There is arguably no better place to find that purpose than within the mortgage industry, where the work we do helps individuals, couples and families secure a place they can truly call home.

At Mortgage Brain, supporting that future is central to our mission. We believe the mortgage sector should be a proactive career choice, not something people simply ‘fall into’. Our industry offers meaningful work, long-term opportunities and the chance to play a role at one of the most important moments in people’s lives. Helping others achieve homeownership is powerful and yet, too often, this story isn’t obvious when young people are seeking out their career paths.

That’s why we are proud to support Mortgage Strategy’s MS NextGen initiative, mentoring 30 chosen rising stars and helping to develop tomorrow’s mortgage leaders and advocates. These are the professionals who will connect naturally with the next generation of homebuyers, understanding their aspirations, challenges and definition of what “home” means, because they are experiencing it themselves.

A Diverse Career Landscape

A quick look at the 2026 MS NextGen cohort  highlights just how diverse the mortgage industry truly is. The group spans a wide range of roles, including web developers, financial advisers, marketing executives, brokers, auditors, and people and culture apprentices, to name just a few. This variety demonstrates that the sector offers a genuine career home for people with different skills, passions and ambitions far beyond the traditional perceptions of mortgage careers.

Mentoring as a Foundation for Retaining Talent

Mentoring through initiatives like NextGen is a two-way partnership. While we provide guidance, experience and support to help young professionals grow their careers, we also gain hugely from their energy, creativity and fresh perspectives. This exchange keeps our thinking at Mortgage Brain innovative and ensures the industry continues to evolve alongside the changing needs of customers.

Mentorship also plays a vital role in retaining talent. When individuals feel invested in and valued, they are far more likely to stay, turning roles into meaningful careers and fostering a sense of long-term belonging within the sector.

Education and Awareness: Building the Talent Pipeline

Education is another area where the industry could make an even greater impact. Introducing young people to what a mortgage is, how homeownership works and the many roles involved in helping people own a home, could transform perceptions of the industry. Schools, colleges and meaningful work experience placements could all play an essential role in revealing the breadth of career opportunities available, from mortgage broking and underwriting to marketing and software development. While we may not be fully there yet as an industry, what we can do right now is to support those already on this path and show that the mortgage sector can be their career destination of choice for the long term.

Training and Development Drives Retention

Mortgage Brain has been a trailblazer for nearly 40 years – driven by solving real problems through technology and supporting professionals across the industry. We are a close-knit, diverse and creative team with a culture built on collaboration and care. We truly believe that when one person is supported and lifted up, we all rise together – and that collective strength benefits not only our business, but our clients and, ultimately, the end customer too.

That’s why ongoing training and professional development sit at the heart of what we do. We attract the best people into the business, and we keep them. We do this by investing in them once they’re here, creating an environment where individuals feel continually challenged, valued and empowered to grow. Our development teams, for example, are given dedicated time every other Friday for learning opportunities – from webinars and workshops to skills-building and technical development – ensuring they continue to grow alongside the fast pace of industry and technological change.

By prioritising development, we reinforce a culture where people want to stay and build long-term careers. When our people thrive, our solutions improve, our service strengthens and the mortgage industry benefits as a whole. Supporting our team isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s fundamental to delivering better outcomes for everyone who relies on us to help make home ownership possible.

Supporting the Future of Mortgage Careers

Ultimately, everything we do is focused on one straightforward goal: helping people secure a place they can call home. By supporting both today’s professionals and the next generation of industry leaders, we’re ensuring the mortgage sector remains strong, skilled and ready to meet the needs of future homebuyers. Being part of that effort, and contributing to meaningful outcomes for customers and colleagues alike, is something we’re proud to do.
